A little about me

I started this blog to share recipes and craft tutorials, but it has turned into a little bit more. I like to share money saving tips, our fun adventures, vacations, my favorite products, free stuff, gardening, and our chickens. I like to keep most of my posts short and sweet.  Highlighting the important aspects.

A little about myself.  My name is Karla. I live in a very small town in Oklahoma.  My husband, stepdaughter, daughter and I live on 160 acres just 2 miles from town.  It’s great because we have no neighbors in sight and are still close to town.  When I say small town, I mean it.  We have one small grocery store, a Dollar General, 4 restaurants/cafes (which is a lot, one being Subway).  There are a few other small businesses in town also.   I met my husband in 2007, and we were married in 2008. I was living in a small city south of Oklahoma City at the time, which was about a 3-hour drive to where I currently live.  I never thought I would be back to this part of Oklahoma, but never say never!  He has 2 children.  When we met his daughter was 6, and son 11. I had no children of my own but wanted one of my own. Right after we were married we were ready to stop the birth control. I was already 36 years old, so my clock was ticking! I did not get pregnant right away, and I had thought maybe I was only meant to be a stepmom. I prayed a lot about it. Not asking for a baby, but just asking God to give me one if he felt that I would be great at it, and could have a healthy baby. Right before I turned 40 I decided to go the family doctor in the very small town I lived in. From what she could see, I had a healthy reproductive system.  She wanted to refer me to a fertility clinic, but I said no.    A little more on my health background, at age 21 I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, and a few years later with Lupus.   I said no to the fertility clinic because I did not want the stress and disappointment it could bring. When I left the doctor’s office I felt pretty down and had pretty much made up my mind that I would never get pregnant.

Almost two months later I had spotting that I thought was my period starting.  After a day or two, my period had not started.  The month before I had one day of spotting, and no period.  So, that got me to ponder, “Was it possible I was pregnant?”  I started reviewing the last couple of months in my head.  I had been really fatigued the previous couple of weeks, but I thought I was becoming anemic (which is common for women with RA), I also remembered urinating a lot more than normal.  But, I had no nausea, vomiting or odd food cravings?  I went to the store and bought a pregnancy test.  I was nervous and excited.  Right away it showed positive!  I was pretty sure I was dreaming.  Could I really be pregnant?  Was this a false positive?  Were there false positives?  I was hesitant to believe it was real.  I went back to the store and got two more tests.  I took one right away and it was positive.  I saved the other one for the next morning.  It was positive also!  I was super excited and nervous, but still not 100 percent sure it was correct.  The next Tuesday (It was Memorial weekend), I made an appointment with the doctor to have a pregnancy test.  They couldn’t get me in until afternoon.  Ugh!  It was a long wait, but I finally found out that I was truly pregnant!  Even after that, it didn’t seem real.  It wasn’t until my first ultrasound that I really believed it.

I had an amazing pregnancy.  I was high risk, but everything went super!  I don’t think anyone expected that.  I had lots of doctor appointments in Oklahoma City at Mercy.  Towards the end, the most exhausting part of my pregnancy was all the appointments.  I continued to work my job full time through my entire pregnancy and took off 3 days before my scheduled inducement (two of those days being the weekend). I had a healthy baby girl on January 7, 2013.  I went into labor all on my own right before we were leaving to head to the city for my scheduled inducement, and had her naturally.  She is the biggest blessing of my life, and a true miracle to me.  My daughter has changed my life, and she has changed me.  There is nothing like creating a life.  I am amazed by her every day.
