10 Reasons I love Raising Chickens

Several years ago we got this opportunity to raise chickens. Today I’m sharing with you 10 Reasons I Love Raising Chickens and why I think you will LOVE it too!

10 Reasons I love Raising Chickens

1. They provide delicious eggs for me and the rest of my family. One egg has only 75 calories with 7 grams of high-quality protein, 5 grams of fat, and 1.6 grams of saturated fat, along with iron, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids (disease-fighting nutrients).

2. They are entertaining. Our chickens entertain us, which is another one of the reasons I love raising chickens. When we go outside, they come running to greet us! The roosters are always having a showdown. We have 1 duck who is entertaining too. Ducks are usually jerks, so they pick on the chickens a lot!

3. They are easy to train. When you have free-range chickens it is important to train them to come when call. This is a way to protect them if a predator is approaching while they are free-ranging. Luckily, it is not hard to Train Your Chickens to Come When Called.

Baby Chicks

4. They hatch cute baby chicks. We’ve had 2 hens run away and bring back baby chicks. Usually, when our chickens get broody we keep taking their eggs. These two girls were so determined to hatch eggs they ran away and hatched their eggs. One came home with 8 chicks and the other with 5 chicks.

5. They eat tons of insects.  My favorite insect they eat is Grasshoppers. Grasshoppers eat up our vegetable garden, fruit trees, blooming trees, flowers, almost anything! So, it is super helpful to have our chickens eat up as many grasshoppers as they can handle.

6. Their poop makes great fertilizer. I add our chicken manure to our compost piles. Chicken manure needs time to break down.  If you plant something directly into fresh manure, the manure could burn the plants.  Give it a few months to compost and cool off.

7. They are easy to maintain. Once you have their coop and everything else set up, chickens are pretty easy to maintain. You can read a little more about raising chickens on my post How to Raise Chickens in the Country.

8. They are nature’s garbage disposal. Our chickens love kitchen scraps and leftovers. They will eat almost anything!

9. Their eggs make beautiful Easter eggs. My daughter always has the prettiest darkest colored Easter eggs when she dyes them for Easter. Especially the tan and brown eggs.

10. They make a tasty meal.  We don’t eat our chickens but that is your prerogative.  I’ve heard they taste delicious.
