How to Make Perfect Crispy Fried Okra

I love growing okra in my garden. It’s usually pretty easy to grow in Oklahoma, it loves the heat! I decided I would share with you How to Make Perfect Crispy Fried Okra.

I always grow okra in my garden. As I said, it’s easy to grow in our hot summer climate. My biggest problem, I don’t ever plant enough. There are two things I really love to make with okra, fried okra, and pickled okra. Most times I do not end up having enough to pickle or to freeze and save for later.

Let me tell you that okra is a pain to harvest. It is prickly and will leave splinters in your hands some times. I advise you to wear garden gloves though I rarely do. That is not a good idea! Not only are they prickly, they also attract small ants, who like to bite! Or sting, whatever ants do. LOL! This is one garden vegetable I don’t let my youngest daughter pick.

When it comes to my okra recipe it has very basic ingredients. It has good flavor but is not too spicy for kids to fall in love with. I like to dip it in ranch dressing and my kids like to dip it into ketchup.

If you would prefer more heat in your recipe you can easily add some red pepper or chili powder.

Here are my favorite ingredients for Crispy Fried Okra

  • Lots of fresh okra
  • Flour
  • Corn Meal
  • Onion Powder
  • Garlic Poder
  • Salt and pepper
  • Egg
  • Milk

Preparing Crispy Fried Okra

Wash okra thoroughly and cut into rounds at your desired thickness

In a shallow bowl or pie pan, combine egg and milk, stirring with a fork until mixed. In a second shallow bowl or pie pan, combine dry ingredients. I like to toss okra in the flour mixture to start.

Place okra in the egg mixture and cover all sides. Place back in flour mixture covering all sides of okra and separating pieces of okra.

Next place okra into the deep fryer in small batches, making sure any pieces that have clumped together are separated. Or place in skillet, do not crowd okra and make a single layer. Flip okra halfway through cooking to cook both sides.

Fry until golden brown or dark brown. Don’t burn it! Remove and place on paper towels or on a wire rack. Add additional salt if desired. Serve will hot and crispy.
