The Most Simple Way to Decorate Holiday Cookies

Welcome to day 29 of 31 Awesome Days of Fall Activities With Your Kids.  One of my favorite things to do around the holidays is making and decorating sugar cookies with my children.  This year I have been extremely busy and I needed a shortcut for this creative activity with my daughter.  I came up with The Most Simple Way to Decorate Holiday Cookies when I found a cool cookie decorating kit at Walmart. This one is similar.

Reasons I decided to do this instead of baking our own cookies.

  • It simplified things
  • I did not have to bake the cookies.  Baking cookie cutter sugar cookies take a lot of time!
  • The frosting and sprinkles were included.
  • Less Mess
  • I did not have to make multi colors of frosting.
  • I did not have to buy a bunch of products (colored frosting, food coloring, cookie ingredients, sprinkles, etc.)

What your kids will learn

  • Creativity
  • Colors
  • Fine motor skills

Supplies

  • Sugar Cookie decorating kit.  We got ours at Walmart, but you can buy this one.
  • Optional for the orange frosting we used:
  • 1 cup powder sugar
  •  milk add 1 Tblsp at a time until desired thickness.  I usually make mine on the thinner side, so it will spread easily and harden quickly.
  • food color of choice. We used yellow and red to make orange.

Instructions

  • Cover your work area with a tablecloth.
  • Mix powdered sugar and milk.  I usually start with 2 tablespoons and stir with a fork.  Add more milk for my desired thickness.  I make mine thin because it spreads easier and dries quickly.
  • Take out all of your supplies.  I gave my daughter a plate to lay her cookies on to decorate.  We put the frosting and sprinkles between us to share.
  • Guide your child while decorating.  Let them look at ideas, help them when they ask for it, show them how to use the frosting.  Encourage them NOT to lick their fingers.  LOL!
When my daughter was done decorating her cookies she had to show them off to the rest of the family.  It’s a great sense of accomplishment for children to work on a project, complete it, and show it off.
Do you like decorating cookies for the holidays?  Do you love shortcuts or do you start it all from scratch?
