This Louisiana plantation is one of the most haunted homes in America. That’s one of the reasons we decided to visit the Ultimate Haunted Plantation In America You Must See.
On our way back home to Oklahoma from New Orleans, we decided to visit the Myrtles Plantationin St Francisville, LA. Many years ago I read the book, The Myrtles Plantation: A True Story of America’s Most Haunted House. This began my interest in the haunted plantation. The book was super spooky and if I owned that house and had the experiences she had, I would not want to live there. Even though the book was spooky, I wanted to visit the plantation. The mansion was featured on several ghost hunter shows on television. Since it was not much out of our way heading home and we were not in a big hurry, I decided we would stop and luckily my husband agreed. He loves ghosts and most things scary.

We easily found our destination with google maps. There was a short winding tree-lined drive to reach the Myrtles Plantation. The house looks just like it does in the photos with its Creole-cottage style with the beautiful wrap around veranda accented with ornamental cast-iron railing, with an elaborate grape-cluster design.
Buying Tickets on Site
We were directed by signs to head to the gift shop for tour tickets. There was a large group of children doing the tour, and a decent amount of people in the gift shop buying tickets. We were able to purchase tickets for the next tour and had time to look around the grounds for just a few minutes before the bell rang to indicate our tour was starting. We were pretty excited for the tour of the Myrtles Plantation.
With all of the stories of the home being haunted, I should have expected the tour to be super spooky. I guess I knew that they would tell some ghost stories, but I thought it would be fine for my 5-year-old. I mean, it wasn’t set up as a spook house or anything. So, if you go with your children be prepared for them to either get scared of the ghost stories or be bored. My youngest did not enjoy the tour. Though, I think she was more bored than scared.
The Tour
The tour guide talked quite a lot about Chloe, a slave who was believed to haunt the plantation. Chloe allegedly murdered the lady of the house and 2 of the children, all by accident. The slaves tried and hung Chloe. These are 4 alleged murders in the home, that are not confirmed. Research has never found any of these stories to be true or accurate. Research actually reveals one daughter living to old age, and the other died of yellow fever along with the mother. They may be only legends, but certainly, make the house very interesting and help explain the haunting.
The only murder confirmed was a lawyer and owner of the plantation. William Drew Winter was shot by a stranger. After being shot, it is told he staggered inside the house and died trying to climb the stairs. It is believed he died on the 17th step of the stairs. Visitors and employees in the hotel, still hear his dying footsteps. You can learn a little more about the plantation on Wikipedia.
Some of the Spooky Things That Happen at the Plantation
Our tour was very interesting to me, my husband, and my teenage daughter. We only visited one bedroom, because the rest are guest rooms. Yes, you can stay at the Myrtles Plantation. That would be so spooky, especially because of all the experiences people have. They do tell you about a lot of ghostly experiences from other guests and locals.
While we were in one of the bedrooms, one of the other tourists noticed a hand print on the bed! See the photo below, right. The guide had already told us that imprints were often seen on the bed, and we got to see one! Now, could this be debunked? I’m sure it could be by many, but it was still neat to have the thrill of seeing it and wondering if it was a visitor from the ghostly realm.
Hang on to Your Earrings
Our tour guide also told us that women visitors often lose a single earing while visiting the plantation. Later the staff will find a single earing hidden somewhere in the plantation. Chloe was allegedly punished for eavesdropping and her punishment was to have her ear removed, hence only one earing disappearing from visitors. The legend is that Chloe steals the earring!
The mirror in the entryway is said to be an original and allegedly haunted with handprints and images of faces in the mirror that are unable to be removed. This mirror was debunked on the show Ghost Hunters several years ago. So, it did not interest me much. It is worth a good luck and a photo though.
Our Ghostly Experience
The mansion has two parlors one each for ladies, and gentlemen. The girls and I stood in one parlor listening to the guide’s stories of the men and ladies dividing up to their separate parlors after dinner. My husband was standing a little way from us in the other parlor. We moved into the game room and our guide told us how several visitors have felt as if they had been tickled, but no one was around. Therefore, it is believed that the ghost children are tickling the guests.
After we left the mansion my husband told me that when he was standing alone in the parlor he felt like something was crawling on his leg or touching him. No one was near him, and there was nothing on his leg. We were pretty sure he might have had a ghostly experience! This happened to him before she told us the story of the ghost children tickling guests in the game room.
After the Tour
We walked around the plantation grounds after our tour. We strolled across the bridge on the pond that leads to a small island with a gazebo. My youngest thought the bridge and island were really neat. We took a quick tour around the rest of the grounds, and I took some photos of the plantation
Conclusion
There is a lot of information about the Myrtles Plantation on the internet. I think you could research it all and make your own conclusions. The best advice I can give is to go visit the Myrtles plantation for yourself! I don’t think you will regret it. There is no doubt in my mind that the plantation is haunted, rather the legends they tell are fiction or fact.

Yes, it is very sad the slaves built all the mansions. I think it’s a part of history we should all learn. I would be super spooked to spend the night, but would consider it.
