Fun and Easy Ways to Decorate Halloween Pumpkins

Welcome to day 9 of 31 Awesome Days of Fall Activities With Your Kids.  I have quite a few pumpkins this year from my garden.  We usually decorate several of the pumpkins, but with little ones don’t like to carve pumpkins.  Plus, it is so messy and not very easy.  Little hands and pumpkin carving just don’t mix! Today we will show you Fun and Easy Ways to Decorate Halloween Pumpkins.

We like to decorate our pumpkins, from painting them to using markers to glitter glue on them.  There are so many options when it comes to decorating your pumpkins!  For this activity, we will stick with the basics because it will be easier for young children.

This Summer we experience the Great grasshopper plague!  It was terrible!  My garden was nearly entirely destroyed.  My pumpkins survived, barely.  Currently, my vines have no leaves on them!  The grasshoppers eventually moved to the pumpkin plants, after devouring everything else!

Instructions

  • Wash your pumpkin with warm soapy water. Dry with a towel.
  • Spread your tablecloth over your workspace.  Put on old clothes or an apron.
  • Decide how you want to decorate your pumpkin. We found ideas on Pinterest for our cat and dog. We painted 2 of ours a solid colors.  The black one we painted with acrylic paint, the white one we used spray paint.  If using spray paint, take your pumpkin outside or into a garage to paint.  Spray paint is messy and can end up on things you don’t want to be painted.
  • If you are doing layers of paint, you will have to wait for each layer to dry before painting the next layer.
  • Draw on your pumpkin if using permanent markers or glitter glue.  Let your kids get creative.  Make your own pumpkin too.
  • Add other embellishments to your pumpkin.  Since we were making a cat and a dog pumpkin, we added ears to both and a tail to the cat.  We also added some spiders and a bat on the pumpkins we used markers and glitter glue on.
